About the African Development Bank
Established in 1964, the AfDB is a leading pan-African development institution. Its mission is to foster sustainable economic growth and social progress across Africa. The Bank boasts 81 member states, including 54 Regional Member Countries (RMCs) within Africa.
Guided by its Ten-Year Strategy (2024–2033), the AfDB focuses on four key priorities, known as the Four Cardinal Points, to accelerate Africa’s growth and resilience:
- Unlock Africa’s Capital Power
- Rebuild Africa’s Financial Sovereignty
- Turn Demographics into a Dividend
- Build Resilient Infrastructure and Add Real Value
Through financial and technical support, the Bank undertakes transformative projects aimed at reducing poverty and promoting inclusive, sustainable development throughout Africa.
About the Young Professionals Program
The YPP is a cornerstone of the AfDB's talent development strategy. It's designed to cultivate a diverse pipeline of future leaders who will drive the Bank's mission and vision. The program identifies and nurtures high-potential young professionals from member countries who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, professional excellence, and a strong commitment to Africa's socio-economic transformation.
The YPP aims to:
- Build a professional pipeline for the Bank’s future leadership needs.
- Develop a new generation of development specialists.
- Strengthen workforce diversity and innovation across the institution.
Program Features
The YPP offers a structured learning and growth experience through four key components:
- Rotational Assignments: Young Professionals participate in three rotations across different departments within the Bank, including potential placements in regional or country offices. These rotations are designed to broaden technical expertise, enhance leadership skills, and provide exposure to the Bank’s diverse operations.
- Capacity Development: The YPP Learning Faculty provides professional and personal development programs that combine classroom learning with hands-on experience. Training includes postgraduate courses with partner institutions, international certification programs, and immersion in the Bank’s operational and strategic functions.
- Mentorship and Coaching: Each participant is paired with mentors, coaches, and peer groups to ensure seamless integration into the Bank’s culture and work environment. This structured support system promotes continuous learning and collaboration.
- Graduation and Integration: Upon successful completion of the program—including all rotations, learning modules, and mentoring requirements—participants are integrated into the Bank’s workforce at the PL5 level, provided they demonstrate high performance, professionalism, and strong ethical standards.
