In a significant development, the Czech Republic has pledged to provide Ukraine with advanced drone-hunting jets, addressing a critical air defense shortage faced by the country. The Czech President, Petr Pavel, assured his Ukrainian counterpart that they will swiftly resolve this issue, offering medium combat planes known for their effectiveness in drone warfare. The Czech army has 24 L-159 jets, capable of being armed with missiles and machine-gun pods, which have been used for training and supporting ground forces. The Czechs' primary fighter jet is the Swedish Saab JAS-39 Gripen. Additionally, Prague may also supply early-warning systems such as radars to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities. However, the situation is complex, with Zelenskyy acknowledging that some Western-supplied air defense systems have run out of ammunition due to a wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. In response, Ukraine and the US are set to hold talks in Miami to discuss security guarantees and economic recovery. A poll reveals that a majority of Ukrainians are against withdrawing troops from the Donetsk region in exchange for security guarantees, indicating a strong stance on military strategy. Despite this, the negotiations' effectiveness is questioned by almost 70% of Ukrainians, with many fearing that Russia might resume attacks even with security guarantees. Meanwhile, a localized ceasefire has been agreed upon to allow repairs to the last remaining backup power line at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been illegally occupied by Russian forces since March 2022.
