The Return of Amanda Nunes: A Controversial Co-Main Event?
In a surprising turn of events, Amanda Nunes' comeback fight against bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison will not be the main event of UFC 324. Instead, it will serve as the co-main event, with an interim lightweight title fight taking center stage. This decision has sparked some debate, but Nunes' coach, Din Thomas, remains unfazed.
Thomas, a UFC Hall of Famer himself, understands the reasoning behind the promotion's choice. He sees it as a close call between two great fights, with the interim title fight being a compelling main event in its own right. "It's like a 1A and 1B situation," Thomas explained to MMA Junkie. "I wouldn't have been surprised either way."
But here's where it gets interesting: Thomas reveals that he finds it more surprising that an interim belt fight was given the main event slot over this one. "Amanda has been away for a while, so I get it," he added. "But either way, we're talking about two fantastic fights, two title bouts, and that's what matters."
Despite Kayla Harrison's impressive judo background and Olympic gold medals, Thomas doesn't view this as a straightforward striker vs. grappler matchup. He believes Nunes will be comfortable in any situation, whether on the ground or standing. "I don't think Harrison has a significant advantage on the ground," Thomas said. "If there's an advantage, it's her best chance to win. But the gap in striking skills is much wider than any potential gap on the ground."
So, what's the key to Nunes' success? Thomas believes it's about preventing Harrison from imposing her game plan. "We're working on strategies to ensure Kayla doesn't get on top and dominate, as she's done in the past."
