East-West Line Update: What to Expect During the 10-Day Service Adjustment in Singapore (2025)

East-West Line's Future Depends on a 10-Day Closure: A Necessary Evil for Singapore's Rail Network

SINGAPORE - The East-West Line (EWL) is undergoing a crucial phase of development, with a 10-day closure from November 29 to December 8, 2025, to facilitate the connection to the new East Coast Integrated Depot. This ambitious project aims to enhance Singapore's rail network, but it comes with challenges and a unique approach to passenger management.

The Schedule and Weather's Role

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has meticulously planned the work schedule, allocating time for potential wet weather conditions, as December is typically one of Singapore's wettest months. Mr. Chia Choon Poh, group director of rail (electrical and mechanical) at the LTA, assured that the work will proceed despite the weather, with adjustments made for hot conditions and potential storms or lightning.

Complex Track Works and Safety Measures

The EWL works involve intricate trackside component removal, installation, and testing. Mr. Chia explained that this includes taking out rail panels and signaling equipment, replacing them with new components, and then testing the entire system. For instance, eight 10-tonne, 18-meter track panels had to be carefully removed between Tanah Merah and Simei stations, a challenging task that cannot be accomplished while trains are operational.

Impact on Commuters and Shuttle Services

To minimize disruption, the LTA strategically timed the closure during school holidays. Shuttle bus services, Shuttle 7 and Shuttle 8, have been introduced to assist commuters traveling to Simei and Tanah Merah. Additionally, SMRT Trains has deployed significantly more manpower across affected stations to manage crowd flow.

Volunteer Efforts and Community Support

LTA officers and SMRT ground staff are supported by volunteers who guide commuters. Ms. Natalie Chong, a community partnership manager at LTA, praised the commuters' understanding and appreciation, with some even showing gratitude by buying drinks and snacks for the volunteers and staff.

A Necessary Step for Singapore's Rail Future

This 10-day closure is part of a series of planned adjustments, with the final one scheduled for the first half of 2026. The LTA's efforts are crucial for the future of Singapore's rail network, ensuring safe and efficient operations as the East-West Line connects to the new East Coast depot.
