The primary motivation behind this expansion is the transition from monophonic to stereophonic audio. Mik Muller, president of the Greenfield Community Television (GCTV) board of directors, explains that monophonic audio, while suitable for talk radio and AM broadcasts, lacks the immersive quality of stereophonic radio. By utilizing two distinct channels (left and right) for music and audio tracks, stereophonic radio offers a more engaging and dynamic listening experience.
The relocation of the antenna from a street-level position near Sandri Energy on Chapman Street to the rooftop of 393 Main St. has played a pivotal role in expanding the station's reach. The new antenna, rising 600 feet high, ensures comprehensive coverage of Greenfield and surrounding areas, including Montague, Gill, Leyden, Deerfield, and Whately. This change has been celebrated by DJs, who have reported crystal-clear reception in various locations, such as Montague.
The upgrade also includes improvements to the cablecast signal, which has been upgraded to standard definition (SD) digital fiber. This enhancement provides a crisper feed and aligns the station with the Comcast digital broadcast network for public access stations in Franklin County. The GCTV studio now offers a more professional and high-quality environment for broadcasting.
In addition to the technical upgrades, the station is undergoing a period of transition in its programming. The introduction of new DJs and the integration of listener calls and public service announcements are part of the plan.
