When One Quiet Trade Changed Everything for Phoenix
Sometimes, a single roster move can completely reshape a team’s destiny. That’s exactly what happened when the Phoenix Mercury made a bold trade before the 2009 WNBA season — a trade that brought Nicole Ohlde from the Minnesota Lynx to the desert. Before joining Phoenix, Ohlde had already built an impressive résumé. Drafted sixth overall by the Lynx in 2004 out of Kansas State, she quickly made her mark as one of the most consistent post players in the league. During her rookie season, she averaged 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks — solid numbers that showcased her well-rounded talent. The following year, she nearly replicated that performance with 11.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, proving her early success wasn’t a fluke.
And yet, her career took a surprising turn when Minnesota traded her to Phoenix in exchange for Kelly Miller and LaToya Sanders. In Minnesota, Ohlde had been a starter and a key contributor. She embraced her new role with quiet determination, becoming the kind of reliable bench presence every championship team needs. During the 2009 season, she appeared in 21 games, averaging 5.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per outing. The stats may not pop off the page, but her timing was perfect: the Mercury were gearing up for redemption after missing the playoffs the previous year. And as fate would have it, Phoenix went on to win its second WNBA championship, defeating the Indiana Fever in a thrilling finale.
Ohlde played her part when it mattered most. One standout game came against the Los Angeles Sparks, where she scored 11 points, along with two rebounds, two steals, and a block. Even though the Mercury fell 81–78 that night, Ohlde’s performance cemented her value. She was one of four Mercury players to hit double digits, alongside Temeka Johnson (14 points), Cappie Pondexter (13), and Penny Taylor (12). Her ability to contribute in key moments made her an unsung hero in Phoenix’s title journey.
The following year, Ohlde’s path took another unexpected turn. After playing 20 games with the Mercury in 2010, she was traded to the Tulsa Shock. There, she hit her season-high of 16 points — again against Los Angeles — in a tight 92–87 loss. Although her time in Phoenix was short-lived, her influence lingered. She had helped a contender find its rhythm again, fitting herself seamlessly into a team that thrived on chemistry and adaptability.
By the time she retired in 2011, Nicole Ohlde had done more than just log minutes on the court. She had brought professionalism, consistency, and quiet leadership to every team she joined.
