Kansas City's Oldest Building Demolished: A Historic Loss on Main Street (2026)

The Tower Building, a historic landmark on Main Street in Kansas City, is set to be demolished, marking the end of an era. Once a vibrant part of the city's history, this iconic structure is now facing its final days. The building, known as the Jeserich Building, has been a symbol of the city's past for over a century. It was built in 1888, just a year before the city changed its name to Kansas City in 1889. The building's ornate Queen Ann tower and the 'Jeserich' name, which adorned the top for 138 years, have now been removed. The demolition process, which began on Friday, is expected to be completed within a month, according to Chuck Cacioppo, Jr., the president of Industrial Salvage & Wrecking. The building's deconstruction is a slow and careful process, with the first two stories being taken down by hand. The Jeserich Building holds historical significance as the oldest structure on the downtown Main Street corridor, predating the city's name change. It is part of a larger complex, including the 1905 Ward Building, which has already been demolished. The site is being cleared to make way for new development, with plans to include a larger animal hospital, owned by Thomas Feyerabend Jr., who also owns the Union Hill Animal Hospital next door. Despite efforts by neighborhood and preservationist groups to save the building, the Kansas City Council voted to place it on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in October 2022, but the building was deemed structurally unsound and declared 'dangerous' by the city in August. The owners were given 30 days to make repairs or demolish the structure, and the demolition process began in November. This story highlights the complex interplay between historical preservation, urban development, and the challenges faced by older buildings in modern cities.
