Kayla Sanchez Shines as Philippines Claims its First-Ever SEA Games 4x100 Free Gold
The 2025 Southeast Asian Games kicked off with a splash, and the swimming events didn't disappoint. On the first day, the Philippines made history, thanks to the stellar performance of Kayla Sanchez.
Sanchez, a Filipina athlete who previously represented Canada, showcased her talent in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Her impressive 53.79 split was the key to the team's triumph, as the Philippines claimed its first-ever gold medal in this event. The final time of 3:44.26 set a new national record, leaving the defending champions, Singapore, in second place with a two-second gap.
Sanchez's teammates, Heather White, Xiandi Chua, and Chloe Kennedy Anne Isleta, joined her in this historic achievement. Chua and Sanchez had already set a national record in the previous year's games.
Singapore, though not winning the relay title, made a strong showing with Letitia Sim. She set a new meet record in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 31.03, just 0.1 seconds shy of her own Singaporean record. The University of Michigan athlete's performance was a highlight of the day.
Thailand also celebrated a gold medal on the opening night, thanks to Kamonchanok Kwanmuang. In a thrilling 200-meter butterfly race, Kwanmuang outpaced Viet Thi My Tien Vo, winning with a time of 2:11.78, while Vo took the silver in 2:12.10.
On the men's side, Mikkel Lee of Singapore impressed with a 100-meter freestyle win in 48.65, giving Joseph Schooling's previous meet record a run for its money. Lee's time was just 0.13 seconds slower than Schooling's benchmark, marking his first sub-49-second outing.
Vietnam's Hung Tran Nguyen dominated the 200-meter individual medley, clocking a time of 2:02.11 to secure his fourth consecutive win in this event.
Indonesia's Jason Donovan Yusuf and Farrel Armandio Tangkas showcased their strength in the men's 100-meter backstroke, finishing in 1-2 positions with times of 55.08 and 55.89, respectively.
This SEA Games edition promises to be a memorable one, with these athletes and more setting the stage for exciting competitions ahead.
