The MotoGP circus rolls into Le Mans, France, for the French Grand Prix, and what a thrilling start it's been! Johann Zarco, the Castrol Honda LCR rider, dominated Friday's practice, mirroring his victory from last year. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for the home hero. While Zarco was on fire, his teammate, Fabio Quartararo, struggled to crack the top ten. The real drama unfolded as Marc Marquez, the reigning World Champion, faced an early exit, finishing in 13th place and missing out on Q2. The top ten was incredibly tight, with only three-tenths of a second separating the riders, showcasing the intense competition in MotoGP.
The session was not without its fair share of surprises. Jorge Martin, the 2024 World Champion and French GP winner, crashed at Turn 9, a setback for the Aprilia Racing team. Fermin Aldeguer, another Aprilia rider, followed suit at Turn 3, adding to the chaos. The session took a dramatic turn when Raul Fernandez's RS-GP caught fire, bringing out a red flag and halting proceedings temporarily. But the real action was yet to come.
As the session progressed, Fabio Di Giannantonio, the Pertamina Enduro VR4 Racing Team rider, emerged as the early leader. However, Zarco had other plans, going back-to-back fastest in the final ten minutes, securing P1 and a dream start to the weekend for the home crowd. The battle for the top spots intensified as Pedro Acosta, on a Red Bull KTM Factory Racing bike, folded the front at the penultimate corner, forcing him to return to the pits for a spare bike. Meanwhile, Joan Mir, on a Honda, topped the morning session and briefly took the lead, but Francesco Bagnaia, a double World Champion, edged him out with a 1'30.045.
The final 15 minutes saw a flurry of activity. Alex Rins, on a Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP bike, rocketed up into the top ten, while Martin and Marco Bezzecchi, both on Aprilia Racing bikes, made significant improvements. Alex Marquez and Ai Ogura, both on Gresini Racing MotoGP bikes, also secured top-ten spots, pushing Marc Marquez out of the top ten. Bagnaia, on his final flying lap, crashed, while Marquez, on his first Q1 appearance since Indonesia last season, finished in 13th.
The top ten was a tight bunch, with Zarco on top, followed by Di Giannantonio and Bagnaia, with Alex Marquez and Mir completing the top five. Martin, Bezzecchi, Rins, Ogura, and Acosta filled the remaining spots, ensuring all manufacturers were represented in Q2 directly after Practice. The qualifying session, with only two spots for Q2, promises to be a nail-biter, especially with the threat of rain looming.
In contrast, the Q1 contenders included Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder, both on KTM bikes, as well as Marc Marquez, who finished in 13th. 2025 polesitter Quartararo was only 17th, while Aldeguer, a double podium finisher from last year, managed 21st. The Tissot Sprint, scheduled for 15:00, adds another layer of excitement to the French GP at Le Mans, which, as the saying goes, 'may contain nuts'!
