Just after 3 p.m. local time, an Ita Airways Airbus A320neo carrying the Pope lifted off from Istanbul–Atatürk International Airport. Its destination: Beirut, the pulsating capital of Lebanon, where the Holy Father will stay until Tuesday, 2 December. This marks the continuation of his first apostolic mission since becoming Pope — one that has already captured the world’s interest.
The end of a remarkable four days in Türkiye
With this flight, Pope Leo XIV concludes a significant four-day visit to Türkiye. His time there was filled with encounters rich in symbolism and spiritual meaning. A standout moment came during a solemn commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the world’s first ecumenical council — convened in the ancient city of Nicaea, known today as İznik. Alongside Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and numerous leaders and representatives of Christian Churches from every corner of the world, the Pope honored this milestone in Christian unity.
In a speech that drew global attention, Pope Leo spoke passionately about the need to rise above what he described as “the scandal of divisions.” He called upon all Christians to work towards genuine unity — a message that could not be more relevant in today’s fractured world.
