Restoring Walpole Old Chapel: A Step-by-Step Journey (2026)

The Historic Chapels Trust's restoration project for Walpole Old Chapel in Suffolk is making significant progress. The 17th-century chapel, a Grade II-listed building, has been the focus of a long-awaited repair scheme. Ptolemy Dean Architects Limited secured approval from East Suffolk to commence the restoration in November 2023, with construction beginning in June 2025. Despite initial delays, the first phase of the project, costing £400,000, has been successfully completed. This phase addressed critical issues, including large exterior cracks that posed a risk to the timber frame by allowing water to seep in. The chapel, owned by the Historic Chapels Trust and managed by the Friends of Walpole Old Chapel, serves multiple purposes: a place of worship for weddings and baptisms, a heritage site, and a performance venue. The work is being executed by Cliveden Conservation, a company specializing in the preservation of historic buildings and monuments. The next phase is set to begin in 2027, ensuring the chapel's longevity and continued functionality.
