Road Rage Killer's Sentence Reduced: Ex-IT Consultant Gets 12 Years (2025)

A shocking reduction in sentence has sparked debate in the legal community and beyond. In a controversial move, the Federal Court has reduced the punishment for a former IT consultant involved in a fatal road rage incident, leaving many questioning the decision.

In a case that has gripped Putrajaya, the court allowed the appeal of the ex-consultant, Yew Wei Liang, who was convicted of killing a bank manager during a road rage incident six years ago. The original sentence of 16 years has been slashed to 12 years, with the court deeming the initial punishment excessive.

The three-judge panel, led by Justice Noordin Hassan, expressed their view that the sentence was too harsh. But here's where it gets controversial: the court's decision has raised eyebrows, as it could be seen as a lenient approach to a serious crime.

Yew's emotional reaction in the courtroom, sobbing in the dock, contrasted with the relief on his family's faces. His lawyer, N Sivananthan, stated that with good behavior, Yew could be released as early as 2027.

The court dismissed Yew's appeal to reduce the charge to involuntary manslaughter, but also rejected the prosecution's request to upgrade the conviction to murder, which carries a potential death penalty or up to 40 years in prison, along with corporal punishment.

The case dates back to a tragic incident on the North-South Expressway near Bandar Baru Bangi on August 10, 2019, where Yew repeatedly rammed his vehicle into Syed Danial Syed Syakir's car, resulting in the 29-year-old's death. Initially charged with murder, Yew was later found guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide by Justice Julia Ibrahim.

And this is the part most people miss: the reduction in sentence has ignited discussions on legal fairness and the potential implications for similar cases. Was justice truly served, or is this a controversial interpretation of the law? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
