The quaint town of Skykomish, Washington, with its population of around 150, has been plunged into darkness for over a week, affecting not only its residents but also approximately 200 people in the surrounding areas.
"It's been a rollercoaster ride with the power," shares Chayse Weber, a resident of Skykomish. "We've had intermittent outages since last Wednesday, and it's been a real challenge."
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Skykomish Library has stepped up to provide a much-needed refuge for those without power. With a large generator on hand for scheduled work, the library crew decided to share their resources, offering a warm and welcoming space for residents to charge their devices and stay connected.
"We want to be a beacon of hope and warmth for the town," says Sam Meyer, Facilities and Construction Manager at the King County Library System. "Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to power, heat, and light during these challenging times."
Chris Martin, Client Technology Services Manager, adds, "Our library branch will be fully operational, providing computing facilities, heat, and charging stations for the community. We're here to support our residents and ensure they have the resources they need."
Puget Sound Energy is working tirelessly to restore power, but the task is not without its challenges. Crews face rough terrain and downed trees, with strong winds and heavy rain adding to the difficulties.
The cause of the power outage remains a mystery, but the impact is clear. As of Thursday afternoon, a staggering 45,267 people across Washington are without power, with Island County bearing the brunt of the outage, followed by Snohomish and Pierce counties.
