For Tom Petty, joining The Traveling Wilburys was like stepping into a rock and roll dream, a memory he cherished forever. The experience was more than just a collaboration; it was a meeting of musical minds and a bonding experience that left a lasting impact.
Petty, already a star in his own right, found himself among his idols. He was a fan of everyone he worked with, and despite being younger, he held his own. He quickly formed deep connections with his fellow bandmates. But here's where it gets controversial... While he only knew Roy Orbison for a short time, Petty was struck by Orbison's kindness. Both Dylan and Harrison had shaped rock and roll, and Petty felt comfortable around Dylan. The Heartbreakers meshed naturally with Dylan's classics. But Petty's path to becoming a Wilbury was paved by Harrison.
Harrison, the one who conceived the band, invited Petty almost by accident. Harrison had left his guitar at Petty's, and a casual invitation to the studio turned Petty into a full-fledged member.
Though they never made a third album, Petty never forgot Harrison's impact, saying, “He was the funniest guy I ever met. Such a keen sense of humor. A lot of fun. A wise person. He really wanted to know the meaning of it all. But at the same time, he was really light-hearted and tremendous fun. [Laughs] Just tremendous fun. And we got along so well. There’s really not a day that I don’t think about him.”
Harrison's humor and outlook on life resonated with many. His music wasn't about preaching, but about finding peace, and that sense of euphoria was palpable in his records.
And this is the part most people miss... Petty saw in Harrison someone who truly embraced life. Of all the former Beatles, Harrison seemed the most human.
