A shocking revelation awaits viewers in an upcoming Netflix documentary that uncovers previously unseen footage of Lucy Letby, the convicted child murderer, during her arrest and subsequent police interrogation. This documentary aims to shed light on the extensive investigation surrounding her heinous crimes, presenting not only clips from the police interviews but also insights from senior detectives and a heartbreaking interview with the mother of one of her young victims.
This is significant as it marks the first instance where a family member involved in the prosecution has publicly shared their experiences in a television documentary format. In a recently released trailer for the film titled "Investigation of Lucy Letby," we see Letby appearing disoriented in her bed as a police officer reads her rights and takes her into custody. Shot during her initial pre-dawn arrest in July 2018, the bodycam footage captures her being escorted out of her semi-detached residence in Chester, still clad in pink pajamas and a gray fleece dressing gown. As she walks past officers from Cheshire Constabulary, she implores them, "Don’t look, just go in."
In another poignant moment captured on film, Letby is seen tearfully embracing one of her cherished cats before being handcuffed and taken away. Her trial revealed the emotional toll her situation took on her, especially when she was forced to rehome her two beloved pets, Tigger and Smudge, following her charges in November 2020 for the murder and attempted murder of infants.
The trailer also features intense footage from Letby's police interviews, including a moment when Detective Sergeant Danielle Stonier confronts her about a note found during a search of her property, which allegedly stated, "I killed them on purpose." To this accusation, Letby responds with a defiant, "No comment." In other moments, she expresses despair, saying, "I felt like I had only ever done my best for those babies…I loved my job (and) it was all spiraling out of control."
Additional scenes depict Letby in handcuffs inside a police vehicle, being searched by an officer for weapons, isolated in a police cell, and waiting at the station's reception area, a space where suspects are typically charged. The documentary is set to be globally released by Netflix on Wednesday, February 4, coinciding with the opening of inquests into the tragic deaths of six of her victims.
Contributing to the film are several notable figures, including Dr. John Gibbs, a whistleblower from the Countess of Chester Hospital who reported Letby's actions; journalist Kim Pilling from the Press Association, who attended every day of Letby's trials; Dr. Dewi Evans, the lead expert for the prosecution; and Mark McDonald, Letby's new barrister.
Letby, who is now 36 years old and hails from Hereford, is currently serving 15 whole-life sentences after being found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder an additional seven between June 2015 and June 2016. Recently, it was announced that she would not face any further charges related to additional investigations into other infant deaths and collapses.
Cheshire Constabulary had previously submitted more evidence to prosecutors regarding eight potential attempted murder charges and one murder charge linked to incidents at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Furthermore, two more allegations of attempted murder and murder were associated with a single child at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where Letby had completed her student training.
Throughout this tumultuous journey, Letby has continuously asserted her innocence. Her new legal team has provided reports to the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which investigates possible miscarriages of justice, in hopes that her case will be referred back to the Court of Appeal for reconsideration.
Additionally, a public inquiry report led by Lady Justice Thirlwall, addressing how Letby managed to execute her crimes within a hospital neonatal unit, is expected to be released later this year.
