Studio Nirvana's Zenhouse in India: A Sanctuary of Calm and Simplicity

In the serene landscapes of Kerala, India, Studio Nirvana has crafted a masterpiece that embodies the essence of Zen Buddhism. Zenhouse, a two-storey residence spanning 1,393 square meters, is a testament to the power of minimalism and monochromatic design. Nestled amidst lush greenery and mature mango and jackfruit trees, this holiday home invites residents to embrace tranquility and stillness.

The design philosophy behind Zenhouse is deeply rooted in Japanese Zen philosophies, emphasizing simplicity, naturalness, emptiness, balance, and harmony. Studio Nirvana's founder, Avinash Joshy, explains, "At the core, we wanted to create an environment that allows one's mind to settle into peace and quiet." This intention is evident in the layout, where transitional spaces, or 'nothing spaces,' are strategically incorporated to foster a sense of calm and spaciousness.

One of the key features of Zenhouse is its harmonious relationship with the surrounding nature. The existing trees are not only preserved but also integrated into the design. External patios are shaded by these trees, and full-height glazing in the living areas offers breathtaking views of the lush greenery. Joshy elaborates, "These spaces invited a sense of calm and stillness while encouraging spaciousness and ease of movement."

The material palette of Zenhouse is a masterpiece of simplicity. The majority of surfaces are coated in rough grey plaster, creating a subtle and serene ambiance. However, certain areas, such as the upper storey and walls surrounding the site's perimeter, are left as exposed concrete, adding texture and depth to the design. Liz Tomy, the project architect, explains, "The material palette was shaped by a need for absolute calm, something that wouldn’t overpower the architecture."

Zenhouse's layout is a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living. The entrance features a paved, sheltered car parking area and a shallow circular pool, leading to a series of living, dining, and kitchen spaces separated by tree-filled courtyards. Two bedrooms are strategically positioned to the north of the ground floor, while three more grace the first floor, surrounding a home theatre, office, bar, and a swimming pool illuminated by a stunning wall of sloping windows.

The top level of Zenhouse is a sanctuary in itself, featuring an expansive roof terrace that surrounds a small meditation room. This room, wrapped by exposed concrete walls, boasts a roof split by a narrow skylight, creating a serene atmosphere for reflection and contemplation.

In addition to the main residence, an independent block at the eastern end of the site houses staff bedrooms, a service kitchen, a gym, sauna, and jacuzzi. This self-contained area ensures privacy and convenience for guests and staff.

Zenhouse is a testament to Studio Nirvana's commitment to creating spaces that inspire and rejuvenate. With its harmonious blend of nature, architecture, and design, this holiday home in Kerala promises to be a sanctuary of calm and simplicity, inviting residents to embrace the beauty of minimalism and the tranquility of Zen Buddhism.
